Romanian-born
filmmaker, Gabriela Moraru, has been exploring influences and structures
of cultural backgrounds that go beyond a simple geographical location.
Her ongoing film series "fragments", of which New
York Chooses You is a first segment, discovers layers of traditions
and memories in the creation of art. The artists examine their identity in
the diversity of a foreign land, in a place authenticated by their perceptions.
In 2005, Gabriela opened Salon Manhattan as an expansion of this concept. Gabriela has worked for top media and advertising agencies in Europe and the United States. Her photography, video art and short films have been shown in the US, Europe and Israel. She is a published author of children's books and a skillful translator.
Recently, her video work was on view, as part of the exhibit "Pope John Paul II and the Jewish People", at the Museum of Jewish Herritage in New York. She has just completed the documentary, A World of Paradox, a glimpse on the life of the Jewish community in Belgium during WWII. The film has been released in January 2007 and has been selected for the Calcutta International Film Festival. Her new documentary "Jazz Nights in Paris" is currently in pre-production.
Gabriela is a member of the Board of Directors of the Photography Institute (Columbia University) and studied photography at the International Center of Photography in New York. She has an MA in Literature, speaks French, Spanish, Romanian and Russian and studied Computer Science at New York University. |
